WORKSHOPS

We are planning an exciting lineup of workshops this year. We have a number of confirmed speakers and topics. Other workshop possibilities are being explored, and will be announced as they are confirmed.

* Autism Literature and Research: How to be an Intelligent Consumer-- Jane Johnston and Jared Blackburn.

* Autism and People of Color -- Dr. Carla Bradley.

* Medical Malpractitioners: Self-Advocacy in the Health Care Setting -- Sue Solursh.

* Balancing Two Worlds -- Jim Sinclair.

* Cures and Rights: Medical and Social Models of Disability -- Ron Amundson (via video) and Cal Montgomery.

* Models of Identity Development as Applied to Autistic People -- Dr. Carla Bradley and Jim Sinclair.

* On Inclusivity -- Cal Montgomery.

* "Speaking for the Disabled"? -- Mayer Shevin.

* Parenting and Providing Care for Autistic Children and Adolescents -- Bud Cooney, M.S.

* Teaching Techniques for Educators -- Claire Waldron.

* Applied work group on finding appropriate assistive technology (1) -- Cal Montgomery.

* Applied work group on making religious communities inclusive -- Cal Montgomery, Cantor Emanuel C. Perlman, C.S.W., and Rev. Nancy Lane, Ph.D.

* Learning About Me (for autistic children of elementary to middle school age) -- Sue Solursh and Claire Waldron.

* Figuring Out What to Do (for autistic youth of middle to high school age) -- Dave Spicer.

* Learning to Understand (for non-autistic children and teenagers who have autistic friends, neighbors, classmates, or family members) -- Jim Sinclair.

(1) People attending the applied work group on assistive technology will benefit from familiarity with concepts presented in the 1997 Assistive Technology session. The videotape of this session will be screened at the camp on Sunday afternoon. People wishing to order their own copies of the video in advance may do so by sending $12 for the video + $3 for shipping within the U.S. If ordering from outside the U.S., contact ANI to find out shipping costs.

CERTIFICATE TRACKS

ANI will award certificates for people who choose to attend certain combinations of workshops. Registration for a certificate track is optional. As in the past, people may attend whichever workshops they wish. For people who do wish to earn a certificate, the following certificates will be offered:

1.2 Continuing Education Units, granted by Syracuse University under the sponsorship of the Center on Human Policy, may be earned by attending your choice of any seven adult sessions plus the orientation session.

Youth Certificate Tracks

Babysitter Training

For young people age 13-17 who have already received Red Cross or equivalent training in babysitting, and are interested in babysitting for autistic children. You must register for this track in advance, and send a copy of your certificate of completing a general babysitting class.

* Three lunchtime sessions with Claire Waldron
* One 2-4 hour shift assisting in the children's activities program

Young Ambassadors

For a small group of middle school and high school students, some autistic and some not autistic. Participants will explore similarities and differences between autistic and non-autistic people, and will learn about ways to understand and communicate with people who are different from themselves. The size of the group is limited and participants will be selected for diversity in age, sex, disability status, and geographic region. To apply, send a 1-2 page typed letter describing your reasons for being interested in this group, what you hope to gain from it, and any background or experience you have with autism or autistic people. Also indicate your age, sex, grade in school, and whether you are autistic or have a related developmental disability.

Learning About Me

For autistic young people. Elementary school students may receive a certificate of attendance for attending the Learning About Me workshop. Middle school and high school students will attend three workshops, plus the orientation session:
* Figuring Out What to Do
* Choice of On Inclusivity or Balancing Two Worlds
* One additional workshop of your choice (Middle school students may choose the Learning About Me workshop for autistic children. High school students should choose an adult workshop.)

Learning to Understand

For non-autistic young people interested in learning about autism and autistic people. Elementary school students may receive a certificate of attendance for attending the Learning to Understand workshop. Middle school and high school students will attend three workshops, the orientation session, and three discussion sessions:

* Learning to Understand
* On Inclusivity
* One additional session of your choice
* Three evening sessions with Bud Cooney
All young people who plan to attend the Learning About Me, Figuring Out What to Do, or Learning to Understand workshops are invited to write to ANI in advance and tell us any questions, concerns, or special interests you would like these workshops to address.
